Fake It: How to Highlight and Brighten Eyes.
/A fresh, well rested, just back from a day at the spa look can be achieved with a few tricks and the right products. The key is highlighting and brightening.
So, just how do you get that fresh, bright eyed look? Read on to learn how and which products are the best to use.
1. Use a yellow based concealer to cover and cancel out any undereye darkness.
Bobbi Brown makes a wonderful Creamy Concealer Kit, which she actually calls her secret to the universe. The concealers are all yellow based and are formulated with brightening while concealing at the same time. $32.00 at bobbibrown.com.
Benefit Cosmetics has a concealer called Erase Paste. This is a very thick, heavy duty concealer that contains yellow undertones but brightening properties that instantly brighten up the entire area. I find it best to apply with a concealer brush. $26.00 at benefitcosmetics.com.
2. Line the inner rim of the eye with a flesh toned eyeliner shade.
I was first introduced to this concept by the wonderful artists behind Three Custom Color Specialists and their Light Clarifier Pencil. I use this almost daily and have since introduced over four years ago. Why even look elsewhere for a similar one when this creamy pencil does it and does it well. The flesh color makes my eyes pop. It is easy to apply to the rims of my eyes and it lasts all day. One pencil lasts almost a year and is priced right. $16.50 at threecustom.com.
3. Use a soft shimmery white eye shadow on the inner corner of the eyes and on the upper part of the brow bone to open up the eye area.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in White Shimmer 7 is the perfect white shadow with just enough shimmer to get the job done. I especially like this one dabbed into the inner corner of my eyes. $19.00 at Sephora.com.
MAC Eye Shadow in White Frost is another go to product for me, except I really like the way this one shimmers on my brow bone. It reflects the perfect amount of shimmer while not looking too frosty, so forget that frost is even in the name. $14.50 at maccosmetics.com.
5. Use a palette of lighter eyeshadows.
When I want a neutral yet soft shaded eye, I always reach for my Dior 5 Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Incognito. This has five very soft, subtly shaded neutrals that instantly soften and waken up my look, especially when I use it with any of the tricks I have listed here. $58.00 at Sephora.com.
NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Exotic Dance is one of my new favorites. It has a beautiful bright white and gold shadow that instatnly wakes up the loks of the eyes while keeping them soft and simple. $33.00 at nordstrom.com.
6. Use a specially formulated highlighter, highlighting the inner rims of the eyes and brow bone.
Smashbox’s Eye Beam Double-Ended Brightener highlights and brightens eyes in one quick step. The highlight side gives the inner corners of eyes and brow bone a luminous glow, while the brightener side delivers radiant definition when used to line the lower inner rims of eyes. Formulated with antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E as well as moisturizing coconut oil, the formula wakes up eyes instantly. $22.00 at Sephora.com.
The holy grail of highlighters, Yves Saint Laurent is known for this one, and I use it daily. Touch Éclat used in the right places, again like the inner corerns of the eyes and brow bone, gives off the perfect radiance of a softened glow. It coems in eight shades for all of your various highlighting need,s but stick with the original, Luminous Radiance for the freshest of looks. $40.00 at Sephora.com.
